Now that we are just beginning to enjoy some beautiful weather and the temperatures are starting to creep up from the mid-teens, we know that the much warmer months of July and August are just around the corner.
While it’s great to be able to head out to the cottage or the beach and to cool down close to the water, we will still be spending a lot of our time in our houses where it can get uncomfortable when the mercury rises.
If you don’t have central air conditioning, an economical way to keep things cool can be to get a window air conditioning unit. These are available at most home improvement, hardware, or big box stores and even online and depending on the size, could cost anywhere from $200 – $800. The bigger the room, the larger capacity unit will be required, so measure your room(s) to determine what size you’ll need. For example, a small bedroom or office of 100-200ft² may require 5,000btu; a medium bedroom of 250-350ft² could be cooled by 8,000btu, and a large living room/rec room up to 400-550 ft² may need 12,000btu.
If you have never had a window AC unit, you should know that is possible to install these in your window by yourself, with the following caveats:
- You have horizontal sliding windows, often described as double-hung windows. It is possible to install in other window types, but you may have to get some modifications done to accommodate the units.
- You are able to lift these relatively heavy appliances into the open window and properly secure them. If you cannot manage this by yourself, get a friend to help.
- You have measured the window to make sure that the air conditioner will fit the width and height of the window.
The best way to tackle the installation of one of these units is to watch a quality YouTube video that describes all the steps to go through in safely securing these in one or more of your windows. Please look for the link below for guidance.
