How to Reduce Heating Costs AND Stay Warm This Winter

With Halifax’s cold weather approaching, everyone wants to stay cozy and warm; however, with heating costs being a significant part of home living expenses, is there a way to reduce oil consumption and still be comfortable?  We think so.

Here are just a few easy and inexpensive ways to save costs:

If you’re home during the day, set the temperature at the lowest comfortable setting.  When you’re not home, and during the night, you may want to reduce the temperature 1-2 more degrees.

Just make sure not to get carried away – by lowering the temperature setting too much, especially in zoned rooms you don’t use much or in areas above garages or overhangs, you could be inviting freeze-ups in extreme temperatures that can be expensive to repair.

Seal drafty windows

Most local building supply and hardware stores sell plastic sheeting kits that are easy to install.  These kits help eliminate cold air from entering rooms and keep the warm air inside.

Make your doors draft-free

Warm air can escape through drafty doors. To make your doors as air tight as possible, install or replace loose or poor-fitting weather stripping and add a door skirt. This will help keep the cold out.

Close the fireplace damper

When you’re not using the fireplace, keep the damper closed to reduce heat loss through the chimney.  For an even better solution, consider tempered glass doors and a blower exchange system to blow warm air back in when you’re using the fireplace.

Switch ceiling fans to winter mode

In the summer, ceiling fans should run counter-clockwise to create a cooling effect by forcing air down. Adjust all ceiling fans to the clockwise position and run on low. Doing this gently draws air up and forces warm air back down and out.

Maintain your furnace

Annual furnace tune-ups and regular air filter replacements can keep your heating system working optimally.  This not only saves fuel but can reduce the chances of your furnace failing at a time when you need it most.
