Fighting Climate Change & the Effect on Energy Pricing

Climate-Change-Effect-on-Energy-PricingHappy New Year! As we get into the coldest months of the year, we count on our home heating equipment working hard to keep our families safe & warm.  We thought this might be the right time to give you the heads-up on a new program to fight climate change.

The Canadian federal government announced this past year that it will be imposing a tax on greenhouse gases or carbon emissions caused by businesses that produce or use fossil fuels such as oil and gas.  This will include all sources of energy such as natural gas, electricity, gas for cars and machinery, and home heating oil.  The policy came into effect on January 1, 2019.

Nova Scotia has been approved to implement a Cap-and-Trade program to comply with this mandate.  Other provinces have proposed different plans, and several have agreed to be levied a carbon tax to cover the new costs of emissions.

So, how will this new program affect homeowners who heat with furnace oil in Nova Scotia?  Starting this month, oil companies will pay approximately 1 cent per litre more at the wholesale level.  A result of this change will mean the average oil heat customer will pay about $20 more per year regardless of which company delivers your oil.  A similar cost will be levied on other sources of energy such as Natural Gas and Electricity.

Climate change is a serious issue for Canada and the world, and Scotia Fuels joins all levels of government in supporting ways to reduce carbon emissions.  Over the past several years, real progress has been made and we are committed to continuing to embrace new clean technologies, more efficient equipment and enhanced fuel that can provide our customers with better, more efficient and cost-effective ways of heating their homes.
