The First Cold Snap: What Your Heating System Wants You to Know

Your heating system has been waiting quietly all summer. As fall temperatures start to drop, here’s what it would like you to know before the first cold snap arrives.

Heating SystemEarly October in Nova Scotia can be a bit of a tease. One day feels almost like summer, and the next morning has you reaching for a sweater and wondering whether it is finally time to turn the heat on.

Meanwhile, your heating system has been sitting there patiently for months.

If it could talk, it might say something like:

“Before you ask me to go back to full-time work, there are a few things I’d like you to check.”

“Give me a quick test run”

Do not wait for the coldest evening of the month to find out whether everything is working properly.

Turn the heat up briefly and make sure the system starts normally. Listen for anything unusual and make sure warm air or hot water is moving through the home as expected.

If everything sounds and feels normal, great — one less thing to think about when temperatures really drop.

“Please give me some breathing room”

Over the summer, utility rooms and basements have a way of collecting boxes, tools, laundry baskets, and other household items.

Take a few minutes to make sure the area around your furnace or boiler is clear and easy to access. Good airflow matters, and a tidy heating area also makes things much easier if service is ever needed.

“Have a look at my vents and filters”

Leaves, dust, cobwebs, and other debris can build up over the warmer months.

Check any visible vents to make sure they are clear, and look at accessible filters if your system uses them. This is simple housekeeping — no need to take anything apart.

“And how’s the oil supply?”

The first cold snap has a habit of arriving before we feel quite ready for it.

Take a quick look at your tank gauge now rather than waiting until the heat is running regularly. If you are on our Automatic Delivery program, Scotia Fuels manages your normal delivery schedule for you — one less fall chore to remember.

“One last thing — don’t ignore anything unusual”

When you first turn the system on, pay attention to anything that seems different from last season: unusual noises, lingering odours, or signs that something is not operating as it normally does.

Most systems will settle back into their routine without any drama at all — which is exactly what everyone wants.
