As of this morning on September 22, 2022, Hurricane Fiona is projected to hit land in Nova Scotia during the evening on Friday and into Saturday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to most of the province.
While there isn’t anything we can do about the weather, there are several things you should be aware of when it comes to your heating equipment.
- If you lose power, your heating will not operate. Once the power has been restored, your heating system should come back on again. If not, call our 24-hour emergency line.
- If your basement floods, turn the power off to the furnace. Once the water has receded, and the basement is dry, you can turn the power on again. Your furnace should come back on after that. If not, call our 24-hour emergency line.
- During high winds, chimney caps can be blown off your chimney. In most cases, this is not an immediate issue. Collect the cap if you can and call a chimney company to have it reinstalled once the weather has improved.
- Remove any loose items from around your outside oil tank and oil line. During a heavy wind storm, those items can cause damage to your tank and line.
- If your oil tank and oil line are outside, check the area where the oil line enters the house. Rainwater can accumulate there and enter the house if there are any open spaces.
