October is a wonderful month of the year. From witches and goblins to black cats and pumpkins, families in our area have gathered in homes to enjoy turkey with trimmings and to reflect on things to be thankful for, including being blessed to live in one of the safest areas in the entire world.
This October is also a date to remember.
It came about five decades after four men, Gordon Lawley, Laddie Farquhar, Bruce MacFarland, and Phil Corkum, decided they wanted to start an independent home heating oil business built on a basic premise – all-inclusive customer service with a personal touch.
Starting a business from the ground up was not an easy task. In fact, the only deliveries they had at the beginning were to their own four homes! Knocking on doors on the streets where they lived, they began signing up their neighbours as the customer base grew – one house at a time. Each owner was hands on, even taking turns driving the oil truck to make deliveries at Christmas and on other holidays, just to give their loyal employees time off.
A key part of the selling proposition was put in place right from the beginning and is still the same today – direct oil delivery, annual inspections & tune-ups, fast customer service, and 24/7 emergency response is all included in the price of its oil. Word of mouth spread fast about this company with the passion for providing its customers excellent service, and it wasn’t long before they added more equipment and more staff to keep up with their promise of unmatched reliability and trust.
The company that was started 50 years ago remains as Scotia Fuels today, a locally owned family business now managed by a second generation, led by James and Ted Farquhar. While the fleet of oil and service trucks has grown along with its dedicated staff, many of which have been with the company for more than 20 years, the commitment to its original service promise has never waned.
