Oil Tank Safety

Oil-Tank-Safety-1.jpgTo kick off the New Year we’re excited to offer you information on the latest advances in oil tanks and safety designs that can increase your peace of mind and possibly lower insurance premiums in coming years.
So, this month, we’ll talk about oil tank safety.

While the basic design of an oil tank has not changed in decades, there have been many improvements in the materials used in safety valves and protective covers. These innovations help eliminate the possibility, along with the expense and inconvenience, of an oil leak. Here are a few of these new innovations:

  • Manufactured Material – Steel oil tanks, once the standard for the industry are now being replaced by Fiberglass. With Fiberglass, the risk of internal corrosion of an oil tank has been basically eliminated. These tanks are well designed and sturdy. The gasoline industry has been using underground fibreglass tanks for years. Fiberglass tanks can include a 30-year manufacturer warranty and $5 million in liability coverage. On top of all this, Scotia Fuels offers its customers a 5-year interest-free payment plan on all new fibreglass oil tank installations.
  • Coated Copper Oil Line – If you have had a tank installed in recent years, you may have noticed the oil line running between your oil tank and the furnace has a bright orange covering. Not only is the oil line more visible, but the coating is sturdy and provides cushioning in case of impact. The coating also prevents direct contact with the elements which reduces corrosion.
  • Oil Pans and Covers – We have highlighted the importance of oil pans for oil filters and burners in our past Blogs but did you know you can purchase oil pans for your inside oil tank? A full-sized pan can be installed with your new oil tank or you can install a narrow pan between the legs of an existing oil tank. There are also valve and gauge covers which protect some of the most vulnerable areas of the oil tank from falling debris or traffic. These covers can be applied to both inside and outside oil tanks.
  • Haseloh Safety Valve – One of the biggest innovations lately is the introduction of the Haseloh Fuel Safety Valve! This valve prevents any oil from leaving the oil tank if there is an interruption in the flow of oil (i.e. leak) between the oil tank and the furnace. This will prevent any oil spilling due to a leak in the oil line, oil filter and/or the fuel pump. At Scotia Fuels, we believe so much in this product, we have priced it directly into all our Fiberglass tank quotes!
