Updated October 2025 to clarify responsibilities and safety guidance.
We’ve heard from many of you asking: “Can my oil-fired furnace (or boiler/water heater) run during a power outage with a generator?”
The short answer is yes, it may be possible—but any electrical connection or equipment selection must be handled solely by a licensed electrician. Scotia Fuels does not install, connect, inspect, or verify generator hookups.
What you can expect (in plain language)
- Talk to an electrician first. They’ll advise if a portable or standby generator makes sense for your home and what code-compliant equipment is required.
- No DIY wiring. Avoid back-feeding or improvised cords. Your safety—and the safety of utility crews—depends on proper, professional work.
- We’re here for the heating part. Scotia Fuels can help with routine tune-ups, safe operation of your oil equipment, and reliable deliveries (including Automatic Delivery).
General generator safety tips
- Run it outdoors only, well away from doors, windows, and vents—never in a garage, shed, or porch.
- Carbon-monoxide protection: Install CO alarms on every level and test them regularly; replace batteries as needed.
- Follow the manual: Don’t overload the generator; keep cords dry/in good condition; let it cool before refuelling.
- Plan ahead: Discuss plans with your electrician before storm season.
