As a rule of thumb, the air filter in your furnace should be changed every three to six months. However, each furnace and home heating situation is slightly different, so here are a few factors that will help you determine when you should change your filter.
What type of filter are you using?
There are many different styles of furnace filters, such as pleated and panel, and they also have different variations in structure (thickness and materials, for example). They can be disposable or reusable. For the average household a basic disposable filter should be sufficient.
Does anyone in your house have allergies?
While the furnace filter’s main purpose isn’t to keep the air clean, it does help. Essentially the filter catches particles from the air and keeps them from going into the furnace. As a result, the filter also keeps these same contaminants from being recirculated. So, if anyone in your home has allergies, they would benefit from more frequent filter changes or purchasing special filters for allergens.
Do you have any pets?
If you have a dog, cat, or any other animal that sheds, be prepared to change your furnace filter more frequently. Pet fur and dander gets picked up by the filter making it dirtier quicker as pet hair gets everywhere.
Do you have a busy home?
A busy home with lots of activity such as kids and family members coming and going can produce lots of dust, which can lead to more frequent filter changes.
It is important to check your filters regularly. If they are discoloured (grey) or filled with debris (pet hair, dirt), then it is time to replace. A full or clogged air filter will affect the air flow for the house and the operation of the furnace.
