Whether we’ll have to continue practicing social distancing and staying mostly at home for a short or longer period of time, it may be helpful to consider how we can help our family, friends, neighbours, local businesses and ourselves make it through this unprecedented time in the best way we can.
Some people are using the time at home to read a book they’ve been meaning to pick up, maybe learning to play the guitar, learning a second language, or even singing a duet on Facebook or YouTube. Whatever your choice of a new or renewed activity, these things can be fun and stimulating and can help take your mind off current issues.
We can also look out for our family, friends and neighbours. Frequent phone or video calls with close family and conversations from one backyard deck to another are safe and healthy ways of staying positive. Maybe consider having a virtual Sunday dinner with your family – set up the laptop or tablet and enjoy a meal together via Facetime, Skype or Zoom. You could even do a virtual happy hour with friends once a week. Next time you go to the grocery store, ask if you can pick up something for an elderly neighbour. Daily walks close to home are excellent ways to stay fit and enjoy the fresh air.
Local businesses can also use our support. Many have had to close recently. For those, you may want to like and share their social media posts, or leave a review on Google that help make them relevant to their customer base until it’s time to reopen. Some restaurants have pivoted to offering take-out only, so consider helping them by ordering delivery or pick-up. Some smaller grocers carry staple products and don’t have line-ups. Check online to see if your favourite eatery offers gift cards … this could help them with much needed cashflow. Think about pre-purchasing a spa package as a gift for a loved one.
However you spend your time, please make sure you do it safely – wash hands frequently, wear a mask and gloves if you have to do necessary shopping, practice social distancing, stay at home and follow the direction of government & health authorities. We need to take this seriously.
We are all in this together and we will get through it.
Stay Safe,
Your friends at Scotia Fuels
