‘Tis the season for giving, and that is precisely what Scotia Fuels is doing in the city this year! In celebration of its 50th Anniversary as a local, family-run business, Scotia Fuels launched its Fuel It Forward initiative earlier this year. Each of the company’s 35 staff members received $50 cash to spread some cheer in their community – they could donate it to a favourite charity, pay for a drive-thru order or buy items for a family in need. The options were endless … they just needed to spend it. And that they did!
One team member used his $50 to purchase groceries that he and his family used to make a meal for Out of the Cold, a local shelter currently without a kitchen. Other staffers donated their $50 to charities like Prostate Cancer, The Beaverbank Fire Station Food Drive, Autism Nova Scotia, Hants North Food Bank and their local Legion’s poppy campaign.
“It’s been so rewarding for us all to share this experience,” says General Manager James Farquhar. “As a company, Scotia Fuels is used to giving back, but involving our staff and some customers in the process has sparked lots of excitement”
From its inception 50 years ago, Scotia Fuels has always had a strong sense of social responsibility to make meaningful contributions within the community. The company proudly supports several local charities, ranging from cultural arts and sports teams to shelters and health-related causes that total more than $40,000 in annual donations.
“We’re thrilled to be extending our Fuel It Forward initiative to some of our new and long-time customers as well. It’s a big year for us as we celebrate our 50th year in business, and we felt this was a great way to celebrate, especially since community involvement has always been such a large part of who we are as a company,” says Farquhar.
