Ever Wonder How Your Oil Furnace Works?

Oil-Furnace-WorkingLabour Day signifies the unofficial end of our beautiful summer in Nova Scotia and the start of the school year.  With that in mind, we thought a bit of a classroom lesson may fit the bill for September.

This month’s blog provides a look at an oil heat furnace and how it works.  Pay close attention, we might ask questions later!

Your oil furnace is part of a heating system that is connected to your thermostat(s), oil tank, pump, combustion chamber, ductwork, and fans and/or a hot water boiler and pipes.

The heating process begins when the thermostat falls below a selected comfort zone, triggering the oil pump to draw fuel from the indoor or outside oil tank, where it becomes a warm mist.  This spray then combines with air to create flames in the furnace’s combustion chamber and to release heat through a heat exchanger.

If you have a forced-air system, cooler air is drawn from a central intake grate in your home, is heated within the furnace and then pushed by a fan through a series of ducts that are connected to vents or registers in each room of your home.  When the temperature reaches the programmed level, the thermostat sends a signal to the oil pump to stop drawing fuel so the furnace can’t burn any more oil.

In the event, you have a hot water heating system rather than forced hot air, the thermostat, oil pump and combustion procedure is similar but involves cool water moving to a circulator inside a boiler, where it is heated by the burning oil. From there, it travels back through a system of pipes within your home that delivers hot water or steam to radiators, baseboard heaters or in-floor heating coils.

Oil heat continues to be one of the most popular, efficient, and safe ways to heat homes in our maritime climate.  With regular annual maintenance and tune-ups, heating oil systems can provide warmth and comfort to you and your families for years to come.
