More than 50 years ago, a group of local businessmen – Gordon Lawley, Laddie Farquhar, Bruce MacFarland, and Phil Corkum saw an opportunity to launch a different kind of home heating oil company – a locally-owned business featuring customer service with a personal touch.
Knowing it would be difficult to compete with the large national oil companies, while daunting, was not enough to stop them from persevering. They went door to door and phoned homeowners to slowly build the customer base they would need so they could add equipment and staff to carry out their promise of unmatched reliability and trust.
As the years went by, Scotia Fuels continued to grow just as it had from the beginning, through the word of mouth from satisfied customers, never wavering from a passion for serving, and with commitment to a simple motto:
“Treat our customers and employees as we would want to be treated ourselves”
While Gordon and Laddie still own the company but have retired from the business, the next generation manages the operation with the same attention to detail that defined the success of the founders’ original dream. Today, Scotia Fuels is a strong example of local business – many of the staff are long-time valued team members who enjoy the fond relationship they have with their customer base.
With no call centres or outsourced operators, local employees continue to personally answer the phones, almost always within two rings!
